Today, the President of the Supreme Constitutional Court in Syria “Muhammad Jihad al-Lahham”, announced the names of the 3 candidates whose candidacy applications were accepted by the court to run for the presidential elections.

Al-Lahham said that after studying the candidacy applications, the court concluded with the overall conclusion and decided unanimously to accept the candidacy of Abdullah Salloum Abdullah, Bashar Hafez Al-Assad and Mahmoud Ahmad Mari for the position of President of the Republic, and rejected the rest of the applications for not meeting the legal and constitutional requirements.

Al-Lahham clarified that those whose candidacy applications were rejected have the right to file a grievance with the Supreme Constitutional Court within 3 days, starting at 9 o’clock tomorrow morning, and ending on 3 o’clock Thursday afternoon.

The President of the Supreme Constitutional Court pointed out that the court’s initial decision was based on the provisions of the constitution and the general election law, and on the receipt of the fund that includes the written endorsements of the members of the People’s Assembly, explaining that the current decision is still preliminary and not final and doesn’t authorize those who the court decided to accept their requests to start on their electoral campaigns, calling for not starting any electoral activity before the court issues its decision to finally announce the names of the accepted candidates and decide on grievance requests.

Sources of the Syrian Documentation Center reported that Abdullah Sallum Abdullah had obtained sufficient support from members of the People’s Assembly to run in the elections, along with President Bashar al-Assad, noting that Abdullah belongs to one of the “Socialist Unionists” party, as the components of the National Progressive Front allied with the “Baath” party, a former parliamentarian, who also held the position of Minister of State for People’s Assembly Affairs.

As for “Mahmoud Mari”, he’s one of the leaders of the internal opposition parties, and he was one of the founders of the “National Democratic Action Commission” and its Secretary General, then in 2016 he became the Secretary-General of the Syrian Democratic Front, the opposition inside the country.

It’s noteworthy that the presidential elections for the Syrians abroad will be held on the 20th of May, and inside Syria on the 26th of the same month.
