Systematic sabotage and theft of the cemeteries of the countryside of “Afrin”.
The militants of the Turkish factions in “Afrin” didn’t stop their massive thefts of the property of the living civilians and moved now to stealing the dead, by deliberately exhuming and stealing the cemeteries of the area under the pretext of organizing it.
Cemetery thefts appeared in the villages of “Shekhorza”, “Haftar” and “Aboudan” in the “Bulbul” district, as the sources reported that the militants of “Suqur al-Sham Brigade” began exhuming the graves of those villages and extracting marble tombstones from graves of the dead.
Many civilians tried to confront the militants’ practices, but they were unable to stop them, especially since the sabotage of cemeteries is taking place in conjunction with the imposition of a security cordon around them, and is also carried out through the mechanisms of the “Salvation Government”, which exhumes graves and uproots marble tombs.
While the militants justified their practices under the pretext of organizing the graves, they didn’t provide any explanation to the families about the fate of the remains of the dead inside the cemeteries, nor did they issue any circular to the families of the deceased in order to move the graves before committing their crime.
The real reason behind the militants’ attacks on cemeteries is the theft of tombstones and marble blocks, in order to sell them again in the markets, especially since all the marble blocks that were extracted from the tombs were loaded into trucks and transported to the militants’ warehouses.
Theft in itself is not the only goal behind the militants’ practices in the cemeteries of “Afrin”, but there is another dangerous goal, which is to erase the identity of the region and bring about a demographic change in it within the policy of “Turkification” followed there, which greatly worries the people, while the thefts of militants reach the cemeteries. “Afrin”, a deliberate desecration of the sanctity of the dead, is considered a witness to the crimes committed by the factions against civilians, amid complete international silence in the face of clear violations of human rights principles.
