Arrangements to coordinate contact between the Syrian and Egyptian presidents in the upcoming days.
The newspaper “Al-Araby Al-Jadeed” published, according to Egyptian sources its assertions about the existence of arrangements by officials in Cairo to coordinate contact between Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and the Egyptian President Abdelfattah al-Sisi, amid expectations that this expected call, which is the first of its kind between the 2 presidents as it will take place over the next few days.
The newspaper pointed out that Egypt’s call to coordinate contact with President al-Assad comes within the framework of its plans to expand its role in the Syrian file during the coming period, especially since several Egyptian initiatives have emerged recently to keep pace with Turkey in the region’s files and reach with it a solution that would end the Syrian war in particular.
The newspaper’s sources also revealed that Egypt pushed the Syrian file to the top of the files of importance between it and Turkey, saying that during the last meeting between the 2 parties, the Cairo security delegation presented a set of demands related to the nature of the Turkish role in Syria, after consultations on security levels with the Syrian officials.
During the last period, a clear rapprochement emerged in the relations between Syria and Egypt, especially with the holding of the talks on reactivating the Arab Gas Pipeline and agreeing to transfer gas and electricity from Egypt to Lebanon through Syria and Jordan.
He also recorded for Egypt during the past 2 years several attempts to interfere in the Syrian file as a “mediator” and to put forward initiatives and agreements aimed at restoring stability to Syria and reaching a solution to end the war that has been going on in the country since 2011.
However, the intransigence of the parties supporting the armed groups thwarted these initiatives every time.
Among the indications that confirm Egypt’s tendency to restore and strengthen its relations with Syria, is that the arrangements for coordinating the first of its kind contact between the presidents of the 2 countries come less than a month after a meeting, which was also the first of its kind, that took place between the Syrian Foreign Minister “Faisal al-Miqdad” and his Egyptian counterpart “Sameh Shoukry” on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, where the meeting at that time showed a clear rapprochement between the 2 parties, and a common intention to cooperate in order to solve the problems facing the 2 countries.
