American dissatisfaction and concern over the visit of “Bin Zayed” to Damascus and meeting President al-Assad
US State Department spokesman, Ned Price, expressed his country’s concern over reports about the meeting that gathered UAE Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, which was held yesterday in the Syrian capital, Damascus.
Price said in a press conference that the US administration does not support restoring relations with Syria, stressing the Biden administration’s opposition to improving Arab relations with Damascus.
In turn, the senior “Republican” in the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, “Jim Risch”, tweeted that: “It is sad that countries restore their relations with Damascus,” adding that: “Security Council Resolution No. 2254 must be implemented before any action is taken towards restoring relations with the Syrian state”.
The American reactions came after the UAE Foreign Minister, “Abdullah bin Zayed” visited Syria yesterday, for the first time in 10 years, during which he met with President al-Assad and together they discussed issues of common concern, according to the statement of the Syrian presidency.
The visit is a violation of the Arab estrangement with Syria since the beginning of the crisis in 2011, while the UAE seeks to lead the camp seeking to return Syria to its seat in the Arab League and develop relations with it despite the US sanctions that prevent any dealings with Damascus.
