Pedersen discusses with the Russian Foreign Ministry preparations for the next round of the Syrian Constitutional Committee
Yesterday, the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister and Special Representative of the Russian President for Middle East and North Africa Affairs, Mikhail Bogdanov, made a phone call with the special international envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen.
The Russian Foreign Ministry announced that “Bogdanov” and “Pedersen” discussed the situation in and around Syria in a fundamental way, with emphasis on the need to strengthen the comprehensive settlement of the Syrian crisis on the basis of UN Security Council Resolution 2254.
According to the Russian Foreign Ministry’s statement, the two sides discussed a set of issues related to preparing for the next meeting of the committee to discuss the constitution in “Geneva” and the next international meeting on Syria within the framework of the “Astana” track.
Pedersen’s talks with the Russian Foreign Ministry came about 10 days before the fifth round of the Syrian Constitutional Committee, scheduled for January 25 according to what Pedersen had announced earlier, indicating that the parties of the committee have agreed on the date and schedule of the meeting.
It is expected that the Constitutional Committee will discuss the “constitutional principles and foundations” according to its agenda, noting that it has not made any progress in its course since starting its works in late 2019.
It is noteworthy that the countries participating in the “Astana” track “Russia, Turkey and Iran” called for a new meeting to discuss the Syrian crisis, without setting a clear date for it, in light of the travel restrictions imposed due to the Corona pandemic.
